Course Requirements
| 1. | Post responses to the discussion forum before each class. Your response should be one paragraph, not summarizing the work read, but reacting to it. What issues does the reading raise for you? What connections do you see between the readings? Also write down one concrete QUESTION which should show that you have thought about the text and are curious to know more. As we go on, you will be encouraged to alternate posting your own responses with responding to the postings of your classmates from the previous class. (with attendance =25% of your grade) |
| 2. | MIDTERM PAPER (10 pages, double-spaced) due Oct. 15. Write a creative transposition of Turgenev's novel Fathers and Sons into a contemporary American story, using analogous characters (keep their initials the same), situations and plot in a contemporary problem setting. Change enough so it's not just a rewrite, but not so much that it's unrecognizable! Each will present the story orally in class. (25%) |
| 3. | FINAL PAPER on any author, work, theme, or related topic (10 pages, double-spaced) due the last day of classes. (25%) |
| 4. | FINAL EXAM: Identification quiz consisting of some 30 passages from all works. Write a brief commentary explaining the relevance of each passage. (25%) |
