Course Requirements

1.	Post responses to the discussion forum before each class. Your response should be one paragraph, not summarizing the work read, but reacting to it. What issues does the reading raise for you? What connections do you see between the readings? Also write down one concrete QUESTION which should show that you have thought about the text and are curious to know more. As we go on, you will be encouraged to alternate posting your own responses with responding to the postings of your classmates from the previous class. (20% of your grade)
2.	2-3 ORAL REPORTS of 5-10 min. With class participation & attendance, this counts for 20% of your grade
3.	MIDTERM PAPER Analysis of Pilnyak's story, "Tbe Death of the Army Commander" (5-7 double-spaced pages, due after spring break. No extensions, whatsoever!) Counts for 20% of your grade.
4.	FINAL PAPER on any author, work, theme, or a related topic (10 double-spaced pages) due last day of classes. Counts for 20%.
5.	FINAL EXAM: Identification quiz consisting of some 50 passages from all works we read, and a brief commentary explaining the relevance of the passage. Counts for 20%.
