Slavery shattered the black ego, but could not kill it. Now, the reaffirmation of the black’s estimate of himself is nursing that ego back to health. This is - soul - the sustaining force which makes the black’s endurance possible beyond the limits of physical capacity. This is the principle of survival for the “new Black.” As a means to perpetuate this idea, “soul brothers” sense themselves united in a common bond of desire to the cause of the Black American subculture.
